“MaConsigne” scheme set to pause ahead of a reboot

Introduced in 2022, the “MaConsigne” scheme seeks to cut down on disposable plastic in restaurants and takeaway outlets by encouraging customers to opt for re-usable containers instead.

More than three years into the trial, the Prince’s Government notes that the initiative has benefited the environment while successfully raising awareness about the issue of plastic pollution. However, it recognises that some practical and financial adjustments are required if the scheme is to meet expectations fully. As a result, the existing “MaConsigne” - in its original form - will come to an end on 31 December 2025, while work continues on a more efficient version of the initiative.

The Prince’s Government would like to thank everyone who has played their part since 2022, from restaurant operators and partner organisations and businesses to technical teams, consumers, and others, for their commitment to this pioneering scheme.

Building on the experience gained, the Government now wants to develop the concept further so it can continue, in a new form, to pursue its ambition to reduce waste and promote the circular economy. This review and evaluation phase, led by the Mission for Energy Transition, will explore different options in consultation with all stakeholders.

The Government’s objective remains unchanged: to offer tangible, innovative, sustainable alternatives that reduce waste at source.
