From 29 September to 1 October 2025, H.E. Ms Anne-Marie Boisbouvier, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Principality of Monaco to UNESCO, accompanied by Ms Sèverine Dusaintpère, Deputy Permanent Delegate, represented the Principality at the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development – MONDIACULT 2025, held in Barcelona, Spain.

Building on the momentum generated during the MONDIACULT 2022 Conference held in Mexico City, more than 160 countries were represented to continue discussions on strengthening the cultural sector and making culture a fully-fledged Sustainable Development Goal in the United Nations’ post-2030 agenda

Over three days, the discussions were structured around six themes, including “Culture for Peace” and “Culture and Artificial Intelligence”, which reflect the major challenges and opportunities shaping the future of culture.

At the close of the conference, a final declaration was adopted by ministers and their representatives, reaffirming their commitment to embedding culture in development policies and in responses to emergency situations.

Among the highlights of this session was the launch of UNESCO’s first-ever Global Report on Cultural Policies, entitled Culture: The Missing SDG. The report provides a global overview of cultural policies across all regions and cultural sectors. The Principality contributed to this report through the national submissions it regularly prepares under the UNESCO cultural conventions to which it is a party.

This session also saw the inauguration of the first Virtual Museum of Stolen Cultural Property. By showcasing stolen artefacts and their histories, the museum serves as a global platform using cutting-edge digital technologies to protect humanity’s shared heritage and combat the illicit trafficking of cultural property.

In continuity with the inclusion of culture in the United Nations Pact for the Future (2024), which recognises culture as a pillar of sustainable development, MONDIACULT helps to strengthen multilateralism as a whole while placing culture at the heart of the international agenda.

The next MONDIACULT conference will be held in 2029 in Saudi Arabia.
