Ms Daphné Le Son, First Counsellor and Monaco’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, reaffirmed the Principality’s unwavering commitment to sport, peace and sustainable development at the United Nations General Assembly debate on sport for peace and development.*

That same morning, Monaco and Qatar jointly organised a meeting of the Group of Friends of Sport for Sustainable Development, attended by Ms Kirsty Coventry, the new President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and Mr Giovanni Malagò, President of the Organising Committee for the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The discussions highlighted the role of sport in social cohesion, gender equality and the building of a more sustainable future.

From the General Assembly podium, Ms Le Son reiterated the importance that Monaco attaches to sport as a path to peace, welcoming the election of Ms Coventry and reaffirming the Principality’s support for the Olympic Truce.

She also called attention to Monaco’s selection as World Capital of Sport 2025, and emphasised the Prince’s Government’s priorities in the areas of sport in school, inclusion, gender equality and sustainability, also hailing the progress anticipated at Milano Cortina 2026 in these areas.

Finally, Monaco’s representative confirmed the country’s commitment to promoting an ethical, safe and inclusive sporting environment, and to ensuring that sport remains a fully integrated part of the United Nations agenda, as a tool for sustainable development, education and social cohesion.
