A group of students from Wolcott High School in Connecticut recently visited the Permanent Mission of Monaco in New York, as part of their preparation for a Model United Nations (MUN) exercise, an international educational programme simulating UN diplomatic work. The visit was organised by the World Affairs Council of Connecticut, a non-profit organisation that aims to raise public awareness about major global issues, particularly among young people.

Representing Monaco, Ms Alyson Calem-Sangiorgio, Second Secretary, explained what Monaco is working on at the UN, focusing on key issues such as sports diplomacy and protecting the oceans.

With this year marking the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, the students wanted to know more about the role of women, and also asked questions about health, the conflict in the Middle East, and cultural identity.

Ms Calem-Sangiorgio reminded them that small countries like Monaco, a member of the Forum of Small States (FOSS), make up the majority of UN member states. Through its work at the United Nations, the Principality seeks to promote multilateralism based on solidarity, responsibility and sustainability.
