Infeudation of Menton and Roquebrune to the Duke of Savoy
Jean Grimaldi is Lord of Monaco when, confronted with his neighbours’ appetite for feudal power, he is obliged to infeudate Menton and Roquebrune in 1448. He consequently becomes vassal of the count of Savoy.
Secessionists from Menton will use this episode in 1848 when they want to join the movement to unite to Italy under the House of Savoy.
