Monaco assumes Chair of the Pelagos Agreement on marine mammals
At the 10th meeting of the three States Party to the Pelagos Agreement held in Monaco on 12 and 13 November 2025, the Principality of Monaco was appointed Chair of the Agreement for a two-year term, with Ms Isabelle Rosabrunetto[1] , Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, chairing the two days of intensive talks.
The representatives from the three countries and various partners discussed the progress made in efforts to protect marine mammals, and identified priority actions to be taken in the years ahead.
An emblematic agreement on conservation of marine mammals in the Mediterranean
The Pelagos Agreement was created by France, Italy, and Monaco more than a quarter of a century ago, as a demonstration of their shared commitment to protecting marine mammals in a part of the world under severe pressure from human activity.
The Pelagos Sanctuary stretches for some 87,500 km² from the Giens Peninsula on the French coast to southern Tuscany and down to the north of Sardinia.
In a message to the delegates, H.S.H. Prince Albert II said: “The Principality of Monaco will chair the conference of the parties for the next two years with determination and in the spirit of continuity. This responsibility reflects our willingness to deepen the cooperation between our three countries, strengthen implementation mechanisms, and forge ahead with efforts to raise awareness, particularly with younger generations.”
The Prince’s words are testament to Monaco’s unwavering determination to protect the marine environment through a policy of multilateral dialogue. During its chairmanship, Monaco intends to build on the efforts made by the Parties, in particular by developing cooperation with regional organisations in the Mediterranean and beyond, reaffirming its historic commitment and determination to take firm action to protect a unique part of our natural heritage.
