Monaco takes part in the celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights

On 4 November 2025, H.E. Mr Gabriel Revel, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Monaco to the Council of Europe, took part in the official ceremony held at the Palais des droits de l’Homme in Strasbourg to mark the 75^th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights. The event was attended, among others, by the President of Malta, the country currently holding the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

Adopted on 4 November 1950 under the auspices of the Council of Europe, this Convention established a legally binding framework for the protection of Human rights and fundamental freedoms across the European continent, safeguarding more than 700 million citizens.

The European Court of Human Rights monitors the implementation of the Convention in the 46 member States of the Council of Europe. Individuals may bring a case before the Court in Strasbourg alleging a violation of their rights, once all domestic remedies have been exhausted in the State concerned.

Monaco, like all States Parties, is fully engaged in the European system for the protection of Human rights. The Principality supports the work of the Court through annual voluntary contributions.

The Court is composed of 46 judges, one for each member State. The judge elected in respect of Monaco is Mr Sébastien Biancheri, who took up his duties on 7 July 2025.

As this 75^th anniversary is celebrated, the Principality is preparing to assume, as from December this year, the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers during the sessions dedicated to the supervision of the execution of the Court’s judgments. This mandate will precede Monaco’s full Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Organisation, from 15 May to 10 November 2026.
