Studio Africa exhibition at Quai Antoine I - 18 October to 20 November 2018
At the initiative of the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Quai Antoine Ier exhibition hall is hosting Studio Africa, an exhibition of photographs from the Jean Pigozzi Collection, until 15 November.
These photographic archives of West and Central Africa comprise images taken between 1940 and 1980 by photographers chosen for their work in the studio or outdoors but with studio facilities. People are generally depicted in the foreground, posing and looking towards the camera; isolated in front of a usually monochrome backgroun
The images are as much documents (anthropological, historical and sociological) as they are works of art. They were taken at significant moments in the lives of those photographed: birth, death, marriage, competing for a job, enlisting in the army, enrolling in school, or applying for a passport, etc.
