The Prince Pierre Foundation Literature Council will draw up its shortlist of authors in contention for the Literary Prize 2023 on 10 May, and Dominique Fortrier will be joining the Council as a representative of Canadian literature in the French language, alongside members of the Académie Française, the Académie Goncourt and representatives from the Belgian, Swiss and Congolese French-language literary communities.

Based on a proposal from the Literature Council, H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, President of the Prince Pierre Foundation, put Dominique Fortrier forward to succeed Marie-Claire Blais on the Council.

Over the last 15 years, Dominique Fortrier has produced a unique body of work, which sits at the intersection between history and imagination. Her first novel, Du bon usage des étoiles (On the Proper Use of Stars), was awarded the Prix Gens de Mer at the Étonnants Voyageurs festival in Saint-Malo, while Au Péril de la mer (The Island of Books) won the Governor General’s Award for French Fiction in 2016. Les villes de papier (Paper Houses), a dive into the world of poet Emily Dickinson, earned her the Prix Renaudot (Essay) in 2020, and has been translated into 10 languages.

Established in 1951, every year the Literary Prize, based on the recommendation of the Literature Council, honours a well-known writer in the French language for their entire body of work. The Literary Prize was awarded to Vénus Khoury-Ghata in 2022.
