Department of Cultural Affairs - Baroque Classical Music Concerts - 2 and 4 December 2025
This December, the Department of Cultural Affairs is once again organising a programme of baroque music with two evening concerts in Monegasque places of worship, performed by the ensembles Les Passions, Dulci Jubilo and Concerto Soave.
On 2 December at 8.30 pm, the Église du Sacré-Cœur des Moneghetti will resound with the masterpieces of the maestro Monteverdi performed by Les Passions, a baroque orchestra from Montauban founded by the recorder player Jean-Marc Andrieu. The four-piece ensemble, consisting of two violins, a viola da gamba, and an organ, remains faithful to ancient musical techniques and traditional instruments. They will be accompanied by the members of the chamber choir Dulci Jubilo who will, as their name suggests, be treating concertgoers to a moment of “sweet rejoicing”. The programme is entitled 1643, The Italian Legacy, and explores the heritage passed down from Claudio Monteverdi to Marc-Antoine Charpentier through Giacomo Carissimi, who taught Charpentier and in 1648 composed the famous oratorio Jephte, widely considered one of the finest works of Italian baroque music. The concert will be directed by Jean-Marc Andrieu, in collaboration with composer and choirmaster Christopher Gibert, celebrated for his creativity and efforts to rejuvenate France’s choral repertoire.
On 4 December at 8.30 pm, the Église Saint-Charles in Monte-Carlo will play host to a performance of Des Ténèbres à la Lumière by the ensemble Concerto Soave, featuring soprano María Cristina Kiehr and organist Jean-Marc Aymes, filling the church with spellbinding poetry and sound.
To illustrate the emergence “from darkness into light”, Concerto Soave have put together a programme that sees the shadow of death give way to the joy of Christmas with cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach.
For this musical journey, Concerto Soave’s instrumentalists will be accompanied by a vocal quartet of the very highest quality, performing Bach’s treasured music in all its exquisite and spiritual beauty.
The concerts will be preceded by a friendly gathering starting at 8.00 pm.
Admission is free, subject to available space
