As part of the Prince’s Government’s energy transition policy, Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Minister for Environmental Affairs, Public Works and Urban Planning, accompanied by Mayor of Monaco Georges Marsan and SMEG Executive Director Thomas Battaglione, yesterday gave a presentation on the 160 square metres of photovoltaic panels that were recently installed on the roof at La Roseraie crèche. The decision to build a photovoltaic generator on the building was taken jointly by City Hall and the Government.

With solar energy a major driver of the energy transition in Monaco, the Government is having photovoltaic panels installed during construction of public buildings and state-owned apartment buildings. The Government is also encouraging local generation of electricity from renewable sources by means of a grant scheme and the publication of a solar resource map (https://energy-transition.gouv.mc/Energy-Transition).

This partnership between City Hall, the Government and SMEG is the result of a shared desire to develop exemplary projects in Monaco, particularly for public buildings. Marie-Pierre Gramaglia said: “This project demonstrates the Government’s determination to support the country’s energy transition.”

The installation has a capacity of 30 kWp. It will generate 35,000 kWh locally and result in the avoidance of 3,500 kg of CO2 emissions annually. The output covers around half of the building’s consumption and would be sufficient to meet the electricity needs of seven homes. The technique used – building-integrated photovoltaics on a tiled roof – is a first for Monaco. It offers an operational demonstration of an approach that could be replicated on other buildings.
