Monaco Takes Part in International Wildlife Day

International Wildlife Day will be celebrated on 3 March 2020.  The theme this year is "Sustaining All Life on Earth."  This encompasses all the species of fauna and flora that make up biodiversity, as well as the livelihoods of human beings, especially those who live closest to nature.  This day is an opportunity to recall the value of wildlife and draw attention to the threat posed by the loss of biodiversity, while proposing actions that are essential for the conservation of wildlife and its sustainable use.

The date of 3 March corresponds to the signing, on 3 March 1973, of the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (www.cites.org ).

International Wildlife Day 2020 is part of a decisive year for biodiversity at the international level, with the holding of the World Congress of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) next June in Marseille and the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15 CBD), which will take place in October 2020.

As a reminder, Monaco is carrying out biodiversity inventories and setting up conservation programmes for marine fauna and flora (Groupers, Posidonia, etc.) and terrestrial fauna and flora (the Nice Snowdrop, Peregrine Falcon and Passerines, with the installation of nesting boxes, as well as insects, butterflies, etc.)

Valérie Davenet, Director of Environment, welcomed the commitment of the Prince's Government to protecting and enhancing biodiversity in its territory.  She added that this year will also be decisive for Monaco, as it marks the implementation of a proactive policy of "renaturing" the urban environment and improving quality of life.
