Monaco in Montreal for the ICAO Assembly
The 42nd triennial Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is currently being held in Montreal, Canada. The Monegasque delegation is led by Mr Jean-Philippe Bertani, Permanent Representative of the Principality to ICAO, accompanied by Mr Jérôme Journet, Director of Civil Aviation of Monaco.
Over two weeks of discussions, from 23 September to 3 October, ICAO Member States are addressing major issues such as strengthening aviation safety and security, improving accessibility for persons with disabilities, combating cybercrime, enhancing climate resilience and developing sustainable aviation, notably through the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).
The election of ICAO Council members is also on the agenda of this Assembly. As the executive body of the Organisation, composed of 36 Member States elected for a three-year term, the Council oversees the implementation of ICAO standards and policies and coordinates the work of the various technical committees.
These discussions are taking place in a geopolitical context marked by regional conflicts with a direct impact on aviation security and passengers.
Bilateral meetings with other Member States, such as Singapore, will enable the Monegasque delegation to exchange views on shared challenges and best practices in key areas. Committed to a trajectory towards carbon neutrality by 2050, Monegasque aviation – positioned in the segments of urban and regional air mobility – intends to play an active role in accelerated decarbonisation through the use of SAF and the introduction of electric air taxis (eVTOL), with certification expected by the end of the decade.
For reference, ICAO is a specialised agency of the United Nations, established in 1944. It develops international standards aimed at ensuring the safety, efficiency and sustainability of global air transport. Its headquarters are located in Montreal and it currently has 193 Member States.
