Today, Monaco Telecom unveiled its nation-wide 5G mobile network at the Monaco Yacht Show, as a world first.

At this event, Fréderic Genta, Interministerial Delegate for Digital Transition, took the floor and emphasised that "The Principality is the first country in the world to launch 5G - the face of the Monaco of tomorrow is being shaped today and we can only succeed in developing a Smart Nation in strong partnership with a telecom operator."

"The power of 5G, implemented via a precise network in the territory, will be an essential platform for digital transition.  This launch proves that, day after day, the Prince's Government is shaping the face of the Monaco of the future," he concluded.

At the same time, a drone, connected by 5G, was flying over the world's largest yachting market, broadcasting 360° High Definition images live via a virtual reality headset.

From a technical point of view, 5G will make it possible to increase speeds ten-fold and reduce connection times by 10.  Simultaneous processing will also be improved ten-fold and will be able to support more connected objects via antennae.

Thus, 5G will make it possible to support the exponential growth in mobile Internet use.  The first smartphones capable of using this new technology will be available in 2019.

This development is therefore a natural part of Monaco's evolution as a pioneer in the field of connectivity, and supports the Principality's digital transition, a project led by Mr. Genta.
