Pierre-André Chiappori elected to Académie des sciences morales et politiques

On 26 June 2017, Pierre-André Chiappori was elected to the Political Economy, Statistics and Finance section of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques (French Academy of Moral and Political Sciences), to fill the seat left vacant following the death of French academic Pierre Bauchet. Two hundred years after the renowned sculptor François-Joseph Bosio, who was likewise born in Monaco, Pierre-André Chiappori thus becomes a member of the prestigious Institut de France.

Following his secondary education at Lycée Albert I, the Franco-Monegasque national was admitted to the École normale supérieure in 1974, successfully passed the agrégation[1] in mathematics in 1977, and obtained a PhD in Economics at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in 1981. After a brilliant career in France, including spells at the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), and the École polytechnique, he moved to the United States in 1997, first to the University of Chicago and then to Columbia University, where he is the E. Rowan and Barbara Steinschneider Professor of Economics. He regularly returns to Monaco where, among other things, he chairs the Scientific Council of the Monegasque Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (IMSEE) and the Advisory Board of the International University of Monaco, and sits on the Board of Directors of Monaco Asset Management. He also sits on the boards of a number of major international companies.

The Académie des sciences morales et politiques, founded in 1795 and subsequently re-established in 1832, is one of the five academies grouped under the Institut de France. It is also the oldest French institution devoted entirely to law and the social sciences. Like members of the other academies, those appointed to the institution carry the ceremonial sword and wear the famous habit vert – a black coat embroidered in green. The Académie des sciences morales et politiques has five sections covering different disciplines (philosophy; morals and sociology; legislation, public law and jurisprudence; political economy, statistics and finance; history and geography) and one general section. In common with the other academies, it also has foreign associate members, the most famous of whom is undoubtedly Prince Albert I, a corresponding and later foreign associate member of the Académie des sciences (Academy of Sciences). As a multidisciplinary think tank under the authority of the French President, the Académie des sciences morales et politiques has been consulted by the public authorities on issues relevant to society on several occasions in recent years.
