The Albert II Tunnel: 58% of the Traffic in the Morning Rush Hour

The Albert I Tunnel, which opened on 18 July 2016, the entry of which is situated on the Bd. du Jardin Exotique and the exit on the Bd. Charles III, has made it possible, in particular, to alleviate traffic on the Jardin Exotique/Bd. Rainier III route.

To understand the precise effects of this positive impact, the Department of Forward Studies, Urban Planning and Mobility (DPUM) commissioned a study from a specialist firm.  It also included data from the Integrated Mobility Management Centre (CIGM), which is under the aegis of the Department of Urban Amenities.

"To assess the new redistribution of traffic flow, surveys were undertaken specifically during the month of September, during the school term, at a time when people were returning to work, i.e. a particularly busy time for traffic," emphasised Séverine Canis-Froidefond, Director of the DPUM.

The results show that, during the morning rush hour, the Albert II Tunnel was used by approximately 680 vehicles per hour, which represents 58% of the traffic entering the Principality from the west.  Traffic in the Bd. du Jardin Exotique has therefore decreased significantly (500 vehicles per hour), i.e. 42% of the total traffic.

At the exit of the Albert II Tunnel, the traffic was distributed as follows:

  • Cap d’Ail:  13%
  • Fontvieille via the Marquet link road:  49 %
  • Canton gyratories:  38 %.

During the evening rush hour, the Albert II Tunnel was used by 310 vehicles per hour, i.e. 43% of the traffic entering the Principality from the west.  In the evening, the Bd. du Jardin Exotique route (410 vehicles per hour), i.e. 57% of the total traffic, was used, rather than the tunnel.  One can assume that entries in the evening are less worker-related.

At the exit of the Albert II Tunnel, the traffic was distributed as follows:

  • Cap d’Ail:  13 %
  • Fontvieille via the Marquet link road:  39 %
  • Canton gyratories:  48 %.

"I am delighted with these results. They show that the Albert II Tunnel has fully met the objectives set for its creation.  Regarding accessibility to the Principality upstream of the tunnel, we are working in close collaboration with the French authorities to create conditions that will make it possible to bring about improvements," stated Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development.
