A Monegasque delegation comprising H.E. Mr Robert Fillon, Monaco’s Ambassador to Italy and the Principality’s Permanent Representative to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Ms Elisabeth Lanteri-Minet, Director of International Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and Ms Martine Garcia-Mascarenhas, Second Secretary at the Embassy of Monaco in Rome, is taking part in the 40th FAO Conference in Rome from 3 to 8 July 2017.

The conference opened with a speech by the Italian Prime Minister, Mr Paolo Gentiloni, who recalled Italy’s strong commitment to international cooperation in the fight against hunger and the eradication of poverty.

His Eminence Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State for the Holy See, took to the podium to read a message in which Pope Francis urged the states gathered for the conference to demonstrate active solidarity and make the right to food a reality for everyone.

The overall theme of the conference is a review of the FAO’s work programme and budget for 2018–2019, which are focused on climate change, agriculture and food security. It will tackle food issues, in particular through consideration of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 2 (“End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture”). It will also discuss the famines which are currently threatening 20 million people in four countries (Yemen, Nigeria, Somalia, and South Sudan), making action on the part of the international community an urgent imperative. The Principality of Monaco has already contributed EUR 300,000 to these efforts.
