8 March, International Women’s Day: Monaco stands up for women throughout the world

The Department of International Cooperation supports numerous projects to “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls,” which is United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5.

The right to education and economic empowerment are at the heart of the Department’s vision as it contributes to the implementation of the Prince’s Government’s development policy in its partner countries. For example, in Burundi the Principality of Monaco is working in partnership with UNESCO to provide schooling and professional training for 2,000 vulnerable girls. In parallel, their mothers, grouped into associations, are receiving literacy lessons and opportunities to generate income for their families.

In Niger, Monaco’s Official Development Assistance is supporting microloans to enable vulnerable women to purchase, for example, a flock of sheep, while in Northern Mali, together with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), support from Monaco is enabling 1,000 women living in rural areas to set up a market gardening business

Monaco is also supporting women in the field of health (SDG 3), including working to improve maternal and infant health in the Kolda region of Senegal. As part of the “Stand Up for African Mothers” programme which seeks to train 15,000 midwives in Africa, Monaco is working in partnership with African NGO AMREF to support technology which provides digital training for nursing staff. This should result in a reduction in the currently very high maternal and infant mortality rates in the region.

Assistance is also provided to the World Food Programme in Madagascar, to help women living in the south of the island who are particularly affected by chronic malnutrition. Thanks to the project, more than 2,400 pregnant women receive nutritional support every year as well as iron and folic acid supplements to reduce delays in growth and cognitive development in unborn children.
