UN member states reaffirm vital role of oceans

H.E Ms Isabelle Picco, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Monaco to the UN, took part in a debate on the oceans and the law of the sea during the 71st UN General Assembly. Ms Picco reiterated the Principality’s strong commitment to ensuring the health of the oceans.

She highlighted Monaco’s actions to combat plastic pollution and contribution to climate discussions, and announced the creation of the trust fund for marine protected areas in the Mediterranean, which has financed its first projects.

Ms Picco also emphasised the role of the Monaco Scientific Centre and the IAEA Environment Laboratories in the field of ocean acidification and the associated socioeconomic impacts, as well as the significant work carried out by international organisations headquartered in Monaco, such as the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO).

During the debate, UN member states adopted an annual resolution on sustainable fisheries and proclaimed 2 May to be World Tuna Day.
