A Monegasque delegation, led by H.E. Ms. Carole Lanteri, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Principality of Monaco to the United Nations in Geneva, is taking part in the 140th session of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization, held in Geneva from 23 January to 1 February.

In her introductory remarks, Dr. Chan, the Director-General of the Organization, pointed out that, in a period that is characterised by increased inequality in wealth, international public health remained a unifying force for achieving equitable social results with regard to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This session of the Executive Board will also be marked by a decisive stage in the process to elect the new Director-General of the WHO, culminating in the World Health Assembly next May.  The debates on budgetary issues and finance, as well as the governance of the Organization, are likely to be a major focus.

The Executive Board is one of the governing bodies of the WHO.  It is comprised of 34 elected members and meets twice a year.  Its role is to facilitate the work of the World Health Assembly by applying its decisions and making recommendations to this Assembly.

Monaco has been a member since 1948, and contributes fully to defining the WHO's policy by taking a position on the Organization's strategic directions and by supporting the drawing up and adoption of certain resolutions that are important for the Principality.
