Charles I

Son of the Admiral of France, Rainier I, Charles Grimaldi took the title of Lord of Monaco, which he held from 1331 to 1357.

It was he who bought the lordships of Menton and Roquebrune, thanks to the money acquired in exchange for his military services. Charles Grimaldi had in fact waged war alongside the king of France, Philippe VI de Valois, during the Hundred Years’ War, before participating in the War of Succession in Brittany. Later he joined, at the request of Pope Clement VI, the crusade against Islam King Alfonso XI of Castile.
