The PeaceJam Project 16 and 17 June 2018

On 16 and 17 June 2018, more than a hundred secondary school students from the Principality took part in the PeaceJam programme, implemented for the 5th consecutive year as part of a close partnership between the Department of Education, Youth and Sport and the PeaceJam Foundation.

 To encourage young leaders to engage in positive action to build a more stable world, the PeaceJam Foundation, created in 1996, invites young people to take inspiration from the lives of Nobel Peace Prize winners, drawing on their experience and exemplary commitment.

Thanks to this ambitious undertaking and with the full support of Ms. Isabelle Bonnal, Director of Education, Youth and Sport, pupils from the Principality attend workshops and special discussion groups, where they meet prominent personalities whose work to promote Peace has been recognised worldwide.

At this 2018 event, held at Monaco's Vocational and Catering School (Lycée Technique et Hôtelier de Monaco), the students met Ms. Betty Williams, 1976 Nobel Peace Prize winner and Belfast-born pacifist and activist, who is very committed to the protection of children's rights and was the initiator of the "Women's Peace Movement," founded during the Northern Ireland conflict.

During these two days, high school students also participated enthusiastically in solidarity-based initiatives, such as:

  • intergenerational meetings with residents of La Qiétudine and members of the "Le temps de vivre" ("Time to Live") Club;
  • tending the vegetable garden of the Princess Grace Hospital, with the "Terre de Monaco" association;
  • taking part in workshops and encounter meetings organised by Monaco Red Cross;
  • taking part in debates organised by "Action Innocence" on the subject of children's rights;
  • activities with the "Run Eco Team" association - eco-friendly jogging and litter collection.

At the end of this weekend dedicated to promoting Peace, all the participants attended a screening of the film "Betty Williams - Contagious Courage," on the life and commitment of this exceptional person.  The film was shown as a world premiere at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival.
