Initiative 100% dedicated to preventing litter at sea

The RAMOGE Commission, one of whose concerns is to limit the amount of waste at sea, was keen to support the “Je navigue, je trie” (“I sail, I recycle”) campaign. In the Principality, the Port of Fontvieille launched the campaign on Tuesday 19 July with support from the Ministry of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development and the Société d’Exploitation des Ports de Monaco, the company operating the ports of Monaco.

By providing the means to collect waste, the initiative aims to encourage sailors to adopt eco-friendly behaviours:

“Nothing overboard, all waste back to port!”

Throughout the summer season, sailors will be given a bag for recyclable packaging at the Port de Fontvieille harbour master’s office. They will also have self-service access to two waste bag dispensers for non-recyclable waste.

The effectiveness of these provisions will be evaluated with the support of the Société Monégasque d’Assainissement (Monegasque Sanitation Company) and the Department of Urban Amenities.

Previous campaigns conducted in France led to a noticeable increase in the amount of waste recycled at participating ports. In 2015, 111,000 sailors learned more about the right approach to adopt with regard to their on-board waste.

*Vacances Propres: A French association which works in partnership with the Association des Maires de France (AMF, Association of French Mayors) and receives support from the French Ministry of the Environment, Energy and the Sea to raise awareness of the need to reduce litter.
