With the assistance of the Prince’s Government, the Association MOnégasque pour le REgroupement des amis et familles de malades PSYchiatriques de Monaco (Monegasque Association for Friends and Family of Psychiatric Patients in Monaco) last month opened a non-medicalised space for stabilised psychiatric patients at 3 Avenue Pasteur.

The GEMM D’AMORE PSY Monegasque mutual aid group is a friendly space which will enable those who use it to break free from the isolation and social exclusion that they often face. It was opened on Wednesday 22 June 2016 by H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince, accompanied by Minister of Health and Social Affairs Stéphane Valeri and the association’s President, Béatrice Latore. A survey conducted among psychiatric patients in 2013 showed that 99% of such patients wanted to have a non-medicalised space where they could meet.

A paid social and cultural activity leader will help members of the association with various group activities, based on fun, sociable themes and ideas to promote verbal communication. For example, the group will offer recreational (reading, sewing, games, sport) and cultural (visits and outings) activities, decorative art workshops, themed forums and mutual support and assistance (letters, dealing with administrative procedures, etc.).

The D’AMORE PSY MONACO association, supported by the Princess Grace Hospital Psychiatry Department’s multidisciplinary team, was established in June 2008. It is aimed at the families and friends of patients suffering from psychiatric disorders. The association’s motto is based around listening, sharing and offering support.
