Resurfacing Work on the Monaco F1 Grand Prix Circuit
A few weeks before the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix, resurfacing work will be undertaken on part of the circuit, as every year, by the Department of Urban Amenities. This year, work will be carried out on three sections – the Avenue des Spélugues, tunnel, Boulevard Louis II and the Route de la Piscine.
This resurfacing work will be carried out in two phases: the first consists of planing the upper part of the road surface to a depth of 5 cm. For the second phase, a layer of asphalt will be applied and the road reconstituted. To minimise the impact on traffic flow as much as possible, this work will be carried out at night according to the following schedule:
Avenue des Spélugues:
Planing: from Monday 31 March to Tuesday 1 April from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The road will be closed to traffic (apart from CAM vehicles) between the Portier roundabout and La Madone crossroads from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The Louis II tunnel and the Rue des Citronniers will also be closed on both nights. The total closure will come into force when the last bus of the day has circulated, at around 9 p.m.
The section of road affected begins at the entrance to the Louis II tunnel (Portier roundabout side) and ends to the right of the Boulingrins police station. The asphalting work will be carried while the road is closed. The work will be undertaken in an upward direction in the avenue. The work is scheduled to start at 8 p.m.; after this time, buses will be diverted.
Access to car parks: Residents will be able to enter and exit until 8 p.m. Parking on the section affected by the work will be banned on both nights.
Tunnel / Boulevard Louis II / Route de la Piscine
Planing and asphalting will be undertaken from Tuesday 1 to Wednesday 2 April 2014 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Three areas of the highway will be affected by the work: a section in the Louis II tunnel, another in the Boulevard Louis II and the third in the Route de la Piscine by the "tobacconist's bend." During this work, lanes will be closed to traffic from time to time, depending on the progress of the work.
The entry to and exit from the various private car parks on the Boulevard Louis II will be controlled, depending on the progress of the work, from 8 p.m.
The properties of the asphalt used on the F1 circuit meet the requirements of the Fédération Internationale du Sport Automobile. It has been specially formulated to withstand the passage of Formula 1 cars, and is more hardwearing, particularly in terms of tearing and resistance.
In addition to this work for the Formula 1 Grand Prix, regular resurfacing operations are carried out, enabling the Principality to enjoy a particularly well maintained network of urban roads.
