Introduction of Charter for use of terraces

Café and restaurant terraces are popular places to spend time and socialise. They also contribute to the lively atmosphere of the Principality and are a key element of its commercial, cultural and tourist appeal.

In order to ensure that these convivial spaces remain consistent with, on the one hand, the needs of business owners in terms of occupying public space and commercial appeal and, on the other hand, the imperatives involved in ensuring best use of urban space, public safety and respect for the rights of all, the Government, in line with its commitment and with assistance from Egis and Patrick Raymond, President of the Order of Architects, initiated a consultation on establishing a Charter for the Use of Terraces in the Principality.

Now finalised, the Principality of Monaco Charter for the Use of Terraces and Commercial Furniture is an effective tool both for professionals, to help with the design, installation and operation of their terraces, and for State administrative services and Monaco City Hall, which are responsible for handling applications.

The Principality of Monaco Charter for the Use of Terraces and Commercial Furniture comprises six documents, including a general charter and individual charters for each of the following five districts: Port Hercule and kiosks, Fontvieille, Monaco-Ville, Portier and Spélugues, Allée Lazare Sauvaigo and Promenade Honoré II.

Those seeking to set up or renovate a terrace area will simply need to refer to the relevant specifications for their district in order to understand all of the design elements required. Terraces in areas not covered by the district charters will be regulated by the general charter.
