Department of Urban Amenities: pest control campaign

Part of the role of the Department of Urban Amenities involves controlling pests (mosquitoes, rats, pigeons, etc.) in publicly owned areas including green spaces, valleys, service tunnels and sewage networks.

Between April and October, a biological larvicide is sprayed every three weeks to limit the proliferation of mosquitoes. In addition to these preventive measures, interventions are carried out on the basis of observations made by staff from the Department of Urban Amenities on the ground, and on the weather.

Director of Urban Amenities Jean-Luc Puyo stresses: “It is vital to remember that stagnant water remains the most common place for mosquito larvae to develop. It is therefore important that people take care to avoid areas of stagnant water, including in containers, buckets and plant pot saucers, which should be emptied regularly.”

With regard to the other pests:

  • three campaigns to capture pigeons are conducted every year in Monaco
  • a full insect control campaign takes place once a quarter in the Principality’s sewers, as well as a campaign to remove rats from the entire territory of Monaco (sewers, public gardens, etc.)
  • Department of Urban Amenities staff deal with rats and cockroaches in problem areas throughout the year
