Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation between Mauritania and the Principality of Monaco

From 27 to 29 July 2016, a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation made an official visit to Mauritania to meet with the Mauritanian authorities and partners of Monaco's Official Development Assistance.  This visit was an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations between the two States, in particular by signing Cooperation Framework Agreements.

During this official visit, the Monegasque delegation, headed by Isabelle Rosabrunetto, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, was received by the highest Mauritanian authorities.

The delegation met with the Minister of Health, Professor Boubacar Kane, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Isselkou Ould Ahmed Izid Bih.  At these audiences, the main partnerships of Monaco's Official Development Assistance in Mauritania were presented, and future prospects for collaboration between the two States were discussed.

Following a working meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mohamed Lemine Moulaye Ely, Interim Secretary General and Isabelle Rosabrunetto signed a Cooperation Framework Agreement to enable institutional dialogue to be increased and strengthen links of cooperation between the two States, through the establishment of a Bilateral Cooperation Committee.

The delegation also attended a ceremony to celebrate 20 years of cooperation between the Principality of Monaco and Mauritania in the field of civil protection, which was initiated by Monaco Fire and Emergency Service.  To close this event, Baba Ould Boumeiss, Secretary General of the Ministry of the Interior and Decentralisation, and Isabelle Rosabrunetto, signed a sectoral Framework Agreement in the field of civil protection.

The delegation was then received at an audience with Ahmedou Ould Abdalla, Minister of the Interior and Decentralisation, who, following a proposal by the President of the Republic, awarded them the medal of Knight of the National Order of Merit.  This decoration demonstrates Mauritania's recognition of cooperation between the two States.

Finally, this trip was also an opportunity to visit several partners that are supported by the Department of International Cooperation, including the World Food Programme, the French Development Agency (AFD) and ECODEV (a local NGO), as well as representatives from the Mauritanian private sector (the Federation of Services and Liberal Professions and the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Mauritania).

As a reminder, diplomatic relations between the Principality of Monaco and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania were officially established in 2011. Moreover, Mauritania has been a priority country for intervention for Monaco's Official Development Assistance since 2002.
