On Friday 8 July, the Department of International Cooperation of Monaco participated in the signature of an agreement between the Malian Ministry for the Promotion of Women, Children and Families and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) on a project to support the economic empowerment of women. Thanks to funding from the Prince’s Government, 1,000 women living in rural areas will benefit from assistance to develop market gardening businesses.

Signed in June 2016 for a duration of three years, the agreement between Department of International Cooperation of Monaco and the FAO aims to strengthen food security for 1,000 women working together in market gardens in the Mopti region of Northern Mali.

In partnership with the Malian authorities, the project will involve the rehabilitation of cropland, the development of water supply infrastructure and the distribution of fruit and vegetable seeds and fertiliser to 1,000 recipients.

The women will also be trained in market gardening techniques and, to help diversify their businesses, will be given some farm animals (sheep, hens, roosters).

Some 7,000 people living in the villages where the market gardens are located will benefit indirectly from the project.

At the signing ceremony between the Minister for the Promotion of Women, Children and Families and the Deputy Director of the FAO, the Deputy Director thanked the Government of the Principality of Monaco for this first partnership in Mali, which aims to combat unemployment among women and improve food security.
