On 22 September 2016, H.E. Ms Carole Lanteri, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Principality of Monaco to the United Nations in Geneva, signed a memorandum of understanding between the Monegasque Government and the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) foundation, based in Geneva.

MMV is a non-profit public–private partnership which works on the research and development of effective antimalarial drugs that are affordable and easy to administer. The foundation’s aim is to eradicate this disease which causes more than 400,000 deaths every year, the vast majority of them in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The aim of the project supported by the Prince’s Government, through the Department of International Cooperation, is to develop, in Africa, an innovative antimalarial drug which is affordable and suitable for young children and pregnant women.

The Monegasque Government’s contribution over the 2016–2019 period is EUR 350,000.

Through this agreement, Monaco is continuing its longstanding commitment to the fight against malaria in Africa, focusing particular attention on the most vulnerable groups, especially women and children.
