Creation of a Cardiac Catheterisation Room in Mali

The Monegasque association SHARE, the Prince's Government, AMADE Monaco and the Eco System company signed a partnership agreement on Wednesday 15 March to set up a cardiac catheterisation unit at the Mother-Child Hospital in Bamako, Mali, the first in the country.  The official launch of the building will take place in Bamako on 6 April 2017.

Since 2008, the "Monaco Humanitarian Collective" network of solidarity has been working with the Mother-Child Hospital in Bamako to enable children suffering from cardiac conditions that are non-operable in Mali to receive treatment in the Principality.

In view of its excellent collaboration with this establishment, the SHARE* association, presided over by cardiologists Jean-François Robillon and François Bourlon, wished to develop this partnership by setting up a catheterisation unit in Bamako.

In this way, many children and adults who are currently on waiting lists for medical treatment abroad can be cared for directly in Mali.

This project consists of three successive phases:

  •  Training Malian medical staff in Monaco.  Two teams, each consisting of a cardiologist, a biomedical engineer and a nurse, will be trained in the operation of the room.  The first cardiologist, Dr. Terra, was trained for two years at the Monaco Cardiothoracic Centre in all cardiac catheterisation procedures.  Dr. Toure is currently following the same training under the supervision of Dr. François Bourlon, and will then join this new entity.  Nurses, X-ray technicians and an administrative officer will also be trained in Monaco.
  • Construction and equipment, under the supervision of the Monegasque company Eco System.  This new building will be operational in 2019, with an area of 258 m2.
  • Ongoing training of staff in Mali.  Once the room is built and equipped, the teams will continue to be trained in situ by SHARE and the Monaco Cardiothoracic Centre.

All the partners of this project, the Prince's Government, through its Department of International Cooperation, AMADE Monaco and SHARE's supporters (the Niarchos Foundation, Children & Future and the Monegasque Red Cross) are donors or members of the Monaco Humanitarian Collective (www.mch.mc ).

*The mission of the SHARE association (Sustain Health Development in Africa through Responsible Education) is to train complete teams of cardiovascular medical staff in the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa (www.sharemonaco.org ).
