On 10 October, H.E. Ms Isabelle Picco, Monaco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, reaffirmed the Principality’s unwavering commitment to promoting and protecting the rights of the child during a debate on the issue at the UN Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Issues.

The Ambassador informed the Committee of the initiative led by H.R.H. Princess Caroline of Hanover, President of AMADE MONDIALE, in cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees, to promote access to personal hygiene for displaced and refugee girls in order to prevent sexual abuse and ensure that they are able to attend school. H.E. Ms Picco also talked about the launch of a programme to reintegrate demobilised child soldiers in conflict zones.

It is estimated that some 245 million children live in war zones, and H.E. Ms Picco recalled that Monaco is co-sponsoring Security Council resolutions on the plight of children in armed conflicts.

The Ambassador highlighted the Principality’s support for children who are mistreated by those who care for them. Short-term and long-term support is provided at the Princess Charlene Home for Children, following a court decision.

H.E. Ms Picco also informed the Committee that on 25 June 2018, the third symposium on the rights of the child will be held. The event’s theme will be “violence against children in the home and at school”, and the event will be chaired by H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover. She concluded by setting out the various provisions included in the internal regulations of schools in the Principality relating to respect and zero tolerance for violence in schools, with a particular focus on school bullying.
