Monaco took part in a high-level pledging event for the humanitarian crisis in Yemen

Monaco took part in a high-level pledging event for the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.  The conference was held in Geneva on 25 April 2017 and was co-organised by Switzerland and Sweden, under the aegis of the United Nations.

The event opened with a speech by Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, who reminded us that children are the first victims of this crisis and that an exceptional demonstration of generosity by the international community was required.  He also stressed that only the cessation of hostilities and resolution of the conflict could offer a lasting solution to this crisis.

In response to this appeal by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Monegasque Government has decided to show solidarity by allocating a special sum of EUR 300,000 to the World Food Programme to help populations who are facing famine in three African countries (Nigeria, Somalia and Sudan) and in Yemen.

The situation in Yemen is currently  the world's largest humanitarian crisis, with 18.8 million people in need of humanitarian aid or protection.  The prolonged conflict in this country is having devastating consequences on the economy, security and health infrastructure.  The food insecurity situation has deteriorated dramatically and more than 17 million people are currently at risk of famine.
