Maestro Gianluigi Gelmetti is Appointed Artistic and Musical Director of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra
Just under a year ago, at the request of H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, Maestro Gianluigi Gelmetti was asked to take up the position of "advisory conductor" at the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra.
After ten months of successful collaboration, interspersed with some very emotional moments, it has been decided to confer the role of Artistic and Musical Director of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra on Maestro Gelmetti.
This new chapter in the Orchestra's history represents a spirit of continuity, especially as the Orchestra's path has often crossed with that of Maestro Gelmetti, who was its chief conductor from 1990-1991. Since then, he has regularly conducted the Orchestra, both in concerts and from the pit of the Monte-Carlo Opera, with the success for which he is renowned. So, rather than just a beginning, the unbroken thread of a story is being taken up again.
H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover and Maestro Gelmetti both hoped that, in addition to the duties that are common to all conductors, his mission would be firmly focused on the future.
In this respect, he has been requested, in particular, to develop a policy to promote and develop the talents of young conductors who are already on the brink of a promising career. Inviting young "guest principal conductors" could form part of this approach, and would help them to build their future career. He will also implement the objectives of the Board of Directors with regard to defining a new identity for the Philharmonic Orchestra, with the prospect of new artistic developments for the musicians, thanks to changes in the way that the work is organised, in line with the resources available and training assignments.
All the staff of the Orchestra will support him in this approach, first and foremost the Administrator, Mr. Sylvain Charnay, who is responsible for the general budget, which is always at the service of art.
With the appointment of Maestro Gelmetti, the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra is guaranteed the stability it needs. It can look to the future with tranquillity and develop its programme with enthusiasm!
