The duty of remembrance

To realise the wish of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince to honour a duty of remembrance with regard to the atrocities committed during the Second World War, a Commission for Assistance to Victims of Despoliation has been established by Sovereign Ordinance no. 461 of 23 March 2006, amended by the Sovereign Ordinance No. 1.637 of 13 May 2008.

The Commission for Assistance to Victims of Despoliation (CAVS)

Its role is to examine claims from natural persons who are seeking compensation, for the benefit of victims or their dependents, for material or financial damage resulting from the despoliation of property that occurred in Monaco during the aforementioned period.

This entity, which was initially chaired by the late Mr. Fernand Levi, is currently comprised of the following members:

  • M. Jacques WOLZOK, chairman
  • M. Alain FRANÇOIS
  • Me Serge KLARSFELD
  • M. Roland MELAN
  • M. Jean-Charles SACOTTE

Anyone wishing to seek compensation for the issues in question may submit a written request to the Commission at the postal address of the Ministry of State and complete an information sheet, which will be used for examining the case that he or she wishes to file with this Commission.

The report of the expert group responsible for establishing the list of Jewish people in Monaco who were arrested and deported during the Second World War

In 2011, H.S.H. Prince Albert II asked qualified individuals from a variety of backgrounds to study, impartially and transparently, the available sources on arrests made in Monaco between 1942 and 1944.

This report was made public on 12 February 2015.
