Monaco: 46th member of the Council of Europe
In 1998 Prince Rainier III decided to apply for membership of the Council of Europe, indicating to the National Council in 1999 the importance of "not ignoring what is happening on our borders". In 2001 he urged the assembly to carry out the reforms called for by the Council of Europe in order for Monaco to be accepted as a member. The application of the Principality was accepted in 2004 following the constitutional reforms of 2002.
