Peaks in electricity consumption between 6 pm and 8 pm on 17 and 18 January

The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region has recently been experiencing temperatures below the seasonal average. In this context, the electricity grid operator Réseau de Transport d'Electricité (RTE) predicts “very high” electricity consumption on these two days, set to exceed 7,500 MW between 6 pm and 8 pm.

Faced with this exceptional situation, the Prince’s Government and SMEG are calling on all consumers in Monaco to reduce their electricity consumption between 6 pm and 8 pm to help ensure that the expected peaks in the region pass without incident. In addition, the ÉcoWatt PACA partners are asking local residents to adopt some environmentally friendly measures in order to better control electricity consumption: www.ecowatt-paca.fr/ecogestes/la-liste-des-ecogestes  (available in French only).

The Principality of Monaco joined RTE’s initiative to set up the ÉcoWatt PACA website in 2010. The site is a tool which predicts and alerts users to winter days on which peak electricity demand is expected to be experienced across the region between the hours of 6 pm and 8 pm. Through the site, it is possible to monitor the status of the electricity network in the eastern PACA region in real time. Individuals, businesses and communities in the region can adapt their consumption behaviour as part of an eco-citizen approach.

Here are some simple measures you can take to reduce consumption:

  • Switch off lights when rooms are unoccupied;
  • Heat your home efficiently: 19°C is sufficient for comfort. Close shutters and draw curtains to retain heat;
  • Switch off electrical appliances left on standby in the home or at work (TVs, DVD players, hi-fi equipment, computers, printers, etc.);
  • Use domestic appliances (dishwashers, washing machines) at night if you can;
  • Use low-energy bulbs wherever possible.
